Andrew H. Johnston, At a Glance

Andrew Johnston became fascinated with agronomy at the tender age of 14 when he started working at a golf club. He realized he enjoyed this type of work and has dedicated the past 30 years to honing his skills in golf course design and maintenance.

Mr. Johnston has assisted in turning Sentosa Golf Club into one of Asia’s major golf events that hosts high-profile tournaments. In 2007, he advised and consulted on a S$12 million upgrade that expanded the course's yardage, incorporated SubAir and PermOPore into the greens, and created two lakes to add to the ambiance and complement the Singapore harbor, which acts as the course’s backdrop. Throughout his career, Mr. Johnston has been involved with many high-profile designs, which includes approximately 150 designs.

Prior to attaining his current position, Mr. Johnston served in a variety of positions. For six years, he was the project manager at Golf Course Consultants. Mr. Johnston then served as the director of golf course maintenance and head superintendent at Craft Farms, and was the project manager of Ranger Golf. He also worked as the vice president of design and construction at Bates Golf Design Group.

Mr. Johnston also heads up his own firm, Signature Design Services, which he started in 2009. He teamed up with Harry Bowers, who is also a renowned golf designer, to create a company that features two of the most prominent and experienced professionals in the business. The company offers a variety of golf course design, construction, renovation and maintenance services. He does external agronomy consultations for high-profile facilities, and works with the GMs or their directors of agronomy. He also travels all over and gives advice to his clients to prepare for their golf tournaments.

Mr. Johnston earned a two-year degree in architecture drafting and design, and architecture/cadd at Phoenix Institute of Technology and two-year degree in turf grass science at Michigan State University. To keep abreast of changes in his field, he is a class A member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, and a member of the Asian Golf International Federation (AGIF).
